Owning a vacation home conjures images of wealthy land owners moving households to summer estates. But vacation homes can be anything from a studio condo to a cabin in the woods to a house boat. Here are four compelling reasons to consider buying a vacation property:
A word of caution: You'll want to do your research, talk to others who own vacation homes, and do a careful analysis of the finances. But if you value the above factors, then buying a vacation property might be a smart move for you.
Updating a bathroom is a home improvement project that adds value, as well as comfort. But according to some experts, an average bathroom remodel can cost around $10,500.
If dropping that much is light years away from what you can afford, the good news is that you can do a lot with less than $250, if you do the work yourself.
Stick to light cosmetic changes, like a new light fixture ($95), a new faucet ($75), refreshed grout ($15 plus sweat equity), and fresh paint ($25), along with a new shower curtain and bath rug ($40).
Also consider painting the vanity, resurfacing an old tub, or replacing flooring. Sometimes one big change makes all the difference.
Typically, lower cost improvements have higher returns than higher end remodeling jobs. Adding a new, more modern sink faucet and lighting fixture updates a home quickly and inexpensively. New countertops, updated appliances, and fresh paint do wonders for your kitchen, even if you don't replace the cabinets. Even unnoticed features, like improved insulation, upgraded plumbing, treated wood rot, and refreshed bathroom tile grout can make you—and potential buyers—feel subconsciously better about a house. And don't forget updating your exterior landscaping, front door, exterior lighting, and paint.
